“Family” is full of intimacy and conflict, while family photo is a means for family members to gather and act in unison. Family photo connotes concern, respect and union in terms of the traditional significance. However, the imaging technology is developing so rapidly to an extent that it has changed the nature of family photos. Nowadays, under the influence of popular culture, it becomes a presentation of advertisement, which no longer stresses on the human dignity and individual sensation. Thus, family photos become casual images. (Some even think them as funny.) It is more fancy but not as important as previously. In this project, I express my curiosity of how the family photo is being mediated through visiting various families. I try to explore the role of family photo in contemporary Hong Kong society, through understanding how they look at family photos.
